Chomutov

Chomutov, a picturesque town nestled at the foothills of the Ore Mountains, is a gem of northwestern Bohemia with a history dating back to the 13th century. This historic town, rich in architectural treasures like the Gothic Church of St. Ignatius and the Renaissance Town Hall, attracts visitors with its atmosphere of ancient streets and squares. Chomutov is also home to the expansive Podkrušnohorský Zoo Park, showcasing a diverse world of animals and providing sanctuary to many endangered species. The cultural and social life in Chomutov is vibrant, with the town regularly hosting festivals, concerts, and markets, creating a dynamic and lively community. Therefore, our Poesiomat cannot be missing here.

In the Chomutov Poesiomat, you will encounter several poets who were born in this town, lived here, or were otherwise inspired by it in their work. You can listen to the verses of local natives such as Renata Bulvová, Julius Benko, and Josef Hrdlička, and last but not least, Jiří Žáček. Longtime Czech Radio editor Václav Daněk also recites his poems and tells stories about their creation during the challenging periods of the last century. From the world of prose, there is an excerpt from the book "How the World Loses Poets," the basis for the later famous film and series. The author, Ladislav Pecháček, spent several years in Chomutov as a garrison and later district doctor.

The selection of compositions also includes a large number of musical works. With the song "Gorgona" by the band Víčka, we pay tribute to the significant Chomutov underground music scene of the last century and the local first big beat club in Czechoslovakia, the famous Švermák. From the local rock and punk "incubator," the local legends, the bands "Plus naši" and "Natural," also appear. The musician and composer Jiří Bulis, who left a significant mark not only in the theater world, plays and sings his song "Angel of Joy." The voice of Vlastimil Harapes, another notable native of this region, also resonates here.

In addition to artistically tuned recordings, you can also listen to stories about interesting and lesser-known facts associated with the town of Chomutov. For example, you will learn that you can find yourself in Chomutov as well as in the Arctic, or why Jára Cimrman is actually named Cimrman.
