Mladá Boleslav

Mladá Boleslav. A town on the river Jizera, a town inseparably linked with the automobile tradition in the Czech lands, in the times of the Reformation thanks to the activity of the Unity of Brethren called "Brotherly Rome". Poesiomat in Mladá Boleslav not only reflects the automotive tradition in the form of a narrative by historian Karel Herčík about the beginnings of the company Laurin a Klement or an excerpt from the well-known work The Grandfather of the Automobile by Adolf Branald, but also recalls the Unity of Brethren in the words of the contemporary chronicler Jan Kezelia Bydžovský and offers a reflection by the bishop of the Unity of Brethren on the differences in the Czech language in Bohemia and Moravia.

Mladá Boleslav is also the birthplace of František Gellner. Listeners can hear a selection of his poems and recollections of Gellner's contemporaries about his youth or the last months he spent in Mladá Boleslav just before his enlistment in the World War and subsequent death.

In addition to literary themes, the Mladá Boleslav Poesiomat also offers songs by musical groups associated with the town of Jizera: the first reggae band in the Czech Republic called Švihadlo, the well-known children's choir Paprsek, and the Prague Selection, two members of which, Michael Kocáb and Vilém Čok, have lifelong ties to Boleslav.

Listeners can also look forward to interesting facts in the form of a recipe for the local specialty of Dobrovice beetroot, a talk about the birds living on the nearby Jizera River or memories of Miroslav Jirounek, a chartist and important conductor from Mladá Boleslav.

A number of institutions in Mladá Boleslav participated in the Poesiomat: from the library to the museum and the Dr. Josef Pekar Gymnasium to the Czech Union of Nature Conservationists Klenice and the Municipality of Mladá Boleslav.

The actors of the Mladá Boleslav Municipal Theatre and Divadýlka na dlani lent their voice to Poesiomat.
